Mudtank to Uluru

So, as you have guessed from Matt’s last post we headed from zircon fossicking at Mudtank pretty much straight to Uluru.  We left mudtank just as the weather started to turn very cold, very windy and a bit showery.  We had a quick stop in to check out the campground at Gemtree which looked really nice and the kids enjoyed having a wonder through the gem shop there and seeing some of the lovely jewellry that can be made from the rocks around the Harts Range area – we are looking forward to seeing what the ones we have found will look like all cut and polished by Grunda!!

From there we hit the end of the Plenty Highway – hooray!  We had to get a photo of us crossing the ‘Tropic of Capricorn’ line but found it very tricky to explain this invisible line down the middle of Australia to the kids!

Next we hit Alice Springs for a quick overnight stop as we needed to do a big grocery shop, fill up our gas bottle, do three loads of washing and have a much needed hot shower!  We were really surprised by how scenic the drive in to Alice Springs was – really beautiful and not dry and desserty like we expected!  We stayed at the Heavitree Caravan Park which was pretty cheap ($27 for a site for the night) and it was ok, but very busy and a bit dirty in the amenities etc.  A note for Alice Springs is that you need to pay 50cents to use the public toilets – just something we weren’t expecting!  We are planning on coming back through Alice Springs in a couple of weeks so will do some of the touristy stuff then!

And then it was on to Uluru – a place we were all looking forward to visiting on this trip!  We  had a quick toilet and coffee stop at Stuart’s Well which looks like a nice place to camp and checked out the emu’s and camels there.

Two hours later we stopped for lunch (its about a four hour drive from Alice Springs to Uluru) on the side of the road and I will never forget overhearing Toby say to Jack when he hopped out of the car and started to climb up a sand dune to have a look, ‘Jacko, its soooooo tiny!!’ in such a hugely disappointed voice!  He thought we were at Uluru and the sand dune was it!  Hehehehehehe – so funny had us all laughing for ages and Tobes of course was cranky at being laughed at!

Our next stop was Mt Connor (Jack had to send a photo to his mate Connor!) which often gets mistaken for Uluru – it is huge in its own right!  We crossed over there road here and climbed a very red sand dune to discover a big salt lake on the other side!  Amazing!  The kids loved the novelty of the red sand!

Then Uluru came into sight and it just got bigger and bigger the closer we got!

We camped at the campground at Yulara which is the resort township about 20km’s from the rock.  It was a nice campground with great amenities but obviously very busy with lots of tourists.  It was freezing during our time there – I even had to scrape the ice of the windscreen at 7.30am one morning before heading out to the rock – brrrrrr!  Anyway – we had a brilliant four nights camping here exploring Uluru and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) – I will get some photos and a post on those next – sooooo many beautiful photos from our time there so very hard to choose some to share!

Tasmania – A Post from 9 years Ago!

Tassie-188Thank you to everybody for some great recommendations of places to visit after our ‘Vision Board’ post, we really appreciate people taking the time to help us out and comment to let us know someone is following along on our little journey!  One of our commenters (thanks Sonia!) pointed out that we had missed Tasmania off our ‘Must Visit’ list.  Unfortunately we think that we will have to leave Tasmania out of our trip due to the cost involved with getting us all and the car and camper over there, and the fact that Matt and I have already had a short visit to Tasmania before.

Our first 'camper van' experience!

Our first ‘camper van’ experience was driving this around Tasmania!

A little hard to believe it has been that long, but 9 years ago now, Matt and I spent ten days travelling around Tassie to celebrate our first wedding anniversary!  We had forgotten that this was actually our first ever camper van experience!  We went in April and actually received a shock at how cold it was – I think we shivered the whole time we were there!  Anyway – a little trip down memory lane tonight to share some photos from our time in Tasmania.  It really is a beautiful place and perfect for campervaning as it is only a small island and there is heaps, and heaps to see!!

We flew into Launceston and then flew home out of Hobart so we got to see quite a bit in 10 days.  This will be a test for the memory to see if I can remember where all of our photos were taken – we really should have been more diligent in labelling them properly!!  So here we go, a photo tour of Tasmania from nine years ago!  I bet Matt and I have changed far more than the countryside probably has!!!!

We started with a 15 minute walk out of Launceston to visit Cataract Gorge

Lake St Clair - we did a cruise on the Lake - cold and wet but still beautiful and nice spots to hop off and have a walk. We camped somewhere near here on the side of the road and were given the scare of our lives when we were woken at 1am by someone doing circle work in their ute around us in the camper!! We thought it was going to be the end, but they drove off after a few minutes! It was scary!!!

And that was our trip!  We didn’t get to see anything of the Derwent and Huon Valleys which was a bit disappointing but we have to have a reason to visit again don’t we!!!  It would be remiss of me while talking about Tasmania not to do a big shout out for Mole Creek Caravan Park which is now owned by the family of friends of ours – make sure you stay there if you ever visit Tassie!

Aaargh – looking at all these photos makes me think maybe we better make room in our ‘Around Oz’ trip to go back and have a better look!!!  So many places in this beautiful land to see!!

A Trip to Melbourne

We arrived home this afternoon from a very cheeky extra long weekend away in Melbourne, so while I am fresh and still on my post holiday high, I thought I’d share some photos from our trip.

Matt travels to Melbourne every couple of months for work and when he booked this trip in about a month ago, we decided to see if we could convince Grandma to come down and look after the kids so I could go with Matt this time and make a little holiday out of it!

We figured that it would probably be the last city trip we would get to do for a long time due to our Around Oz trip, and the fact that we are pretty sure we won’t be returning to Brisbane at the end (so time to use up all the frequent flyer points!).  Added to that it was a month out from our 10 year wedding anniversary and Zac Brown Band (yeah – if you hadn’t noticed already – we are big fans!!) happened to be doing their first ever Australian concert on that weekend.  Plus – Melbourne has a little bit of sentimental value for us as it was the first ever holiday Matt and I took together as a couple way back when we were 19!!!

Yeah, yeah – you can stop laughing now!  We were young and skinny and had hair!!

Anyway, some photos of our time away.  A big thank you to Grandma Gayel for babysitting for us – we are very lucky!!!

We stayed at the 'Blackman Hotel' St Kilda - really lovely, but the service wasn't the best (I know, I know - such hardships we have!) Huge step up from the dodgy, dodgy apartment we stayed in when we first visited Melbourne!

So, back to work and reality tomorrow. It is definitely time to knuckle down and start packing up/de-cluttering the house and finalising the equipment for our trip!!!

PS. Apologies for the quality of the photos on the post – they were all taken on our Iphone 4’s as we forgot to take the camera with us – no kids = don’t even think about the camera hehehehe!
