Mission Beach

DSC_0321Hi Everyone!  I’ve got a bit ‘blog stumped’ recently – mainly because we have had heaps of bits and peices going on that I am hanging out to tell you about and I just don’t know where to start!!  So today – I wrote down all the blog post ideas that are running around in my head at the moment, cut them up into strips and dumped them in a hat and pulled one out!  This way I get started somewhere! Apologies if things are a bit all over the place on the blog for the next few days until I get some blog posts done and you are all up to date again!

Right then, let’s get going, I am going to tell you about our trip away to Mission Beach in the school holidays!  It was one of the best family trips away that we have ever had and that’s saying something, as our little family has had a number of awesome adventures!!

The purpose of spending time at Mission Beach was to attend the wedding of a very good friend and because it was in the school holidays, and probably the last chance we will have to get away from the farm as a family for the next six months (due to Mango Season fast approaching!), we splashed out and rented a two bedroom apartment for three nights!  After a very busy school term and a big Field Day here at Blue Sky on the day before we left, we were all sooooooo looking forward to the break!  The drive to Mission Beach was just under 3 hours from our place and it was nice to have some time in the car all together again!  Even Kipp behaved himself for the whole trip – no crying and sleeping most of the way!  We put an audio book on for the kids (they are listening to ‘The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe’ now and loving it!) and Matt and I got some quality time to chat about the farm, our goals, finances etc – gotta love a captive car audience for some deep and meaningful natter!!  Does anybody else solve the world’s problems on car trips too????

On the way we had a quick stop at Crawford’s Lookout on the Palmerston Highway!  It is quite spectacular and a great spot for a leg stretch!

We opted to drive in to Mission Beach via Bingil Bay as it is such a beautiful drive!

Mission Beach is about halfway between Cairns and Townsville.  It is made up of four little villages; Bingil Bay, North Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach and South Mission Beach.  We choose to stay at Mission Reef Resort, located at Wongaling Beach and we thought it was awesome!!  We paid $220 per night for a lovely, spacious, clean, two bedroom, self contained apartment which was just across the road from the beach and we even had water views from our balcony – it was really, really nice!  The kids also loved the pool and I thought the BBQ area with tables beside the pool was a great feature!

We spent our mornings and afternoons at the beach, with always a swim in the pool afterwards, before heading upstairs to the apartment.  The beach at Wongaling does not have a stinger net, but as it is only spring, we were able to swim in the ocean directly opposite the apartment with minimal chance of being stung – not something we would be able to do later in the year!!

It was really just the perfect time of year with gorgeous weather – hot but not too hot and just a lovely spot!  I’ll let the pictures do the talking although I don’t think they do it justice!

  6. Talk about deja vu! We spent a few days in Mission Beach (Wongaling) not so long ago. We left from Townsville about 3 hours south. Looking at your photos – they could be mine 🙂 That is a gorgeous drive from Bingil Bay – one of Australia’s best I think – especially as it is so underrated. We didn’t get to see a Cassowary though 🙁
