Sunday Snapshot – “Just like a chocolate milkshake …….”

Kellogg’s Coco Pops – “Just like a chocolate milkshake ……. only crunchy”.  I know, first up its been a while since we’ve had a Sunday Snapshot and I’m bringing it back with a photo of a box of Coco Pops?!?!?  Stay with me ok!

So, I’m on a bit of a ‘school holidays’ roll at the moment and one of the big traditions in our house is that the kids get to have Coco Pops for breakfast in the holidays (I know, I know – not very healthy, but my justification is that they run it off throughout the day being outside more at home!).  During term time here, it is eggs on toast or weetbix/porridge for breakfast, but due to constant demand – Coco Pops are purchased a few days before the holidays start.  I love that the kids now remind me that I need to buy the Coco Pops and have huge grins on their faces when they spot the box in the pantry, knowing the break from school isn’t far away!

This is a tradition that my mum started for my sisters and I when we were kids.  Growing up on a dairy farm meant we didn’t usually get to go away for school holidays so my mum got creative with other ways to make our holidays fun and a change from the normal routine for us.  Coco Pops and the arrival of our cousins to stay at the farm are my most distinct school holiday memories, we always had a great time in the holidays without even leaving the farm!

I love that just a small tradition can make an impact on a child’s memory.  That something so small as a box of Coco Pops can spell ‘school holidays’ just as much as a road trip, or week at the beach can!  School holiday fun doesn’t always have to be expensive or extravagant – it just has to make a memory or start a tradition. Your kids might even pass it on to their own one day, like I have!

Do you have any school holiday rituals in your house?  Share in the comments below, you never know, you might inspire another family to create a school holiday tradition of their own!  Happy School Holidays everyone!

P.S. I should state that this is not a sponsored post, we did not receive any free boxes of Coco Pops in exchange for sharing this little story!  I wouldn’t say no if Kellogg’s wanted to send us a carton though!

  1. My kids were very excited to pick up their own “holiday cereal” at the grocery store the other day. You guessed it – Coco pops it was. The only difference is my kids don’t get it on school holidays – they get it when we are traveling on holidays.

As an adult I think there is nothing worse than coco pops for breakfast – but I did like them as a child so I can’t complain too much! Enjoy your holiday in Cairns!

  2. My absolute favourite school holidays started in Dec 27 (or thereabouts) each year until i was 17. The day after Boxing Day, i started 4-6 weeks ‘camping’ on Tathra Beach on the Far South Coast, with my best friend and her mum & dad. Sand, sea, surf – all free, though the comic books (which i read in 5 minutes flat) weren’t!!
